Outfitted :: Denim on Denim

Zara chambray (old) / Mink Pink denim shorts / H&M metallic loafers / Thrifted scarf / Marc by Marc Jacobs bag / Forever 21 sunnies

What upppp! Happy Friday y'all! Who's excited it's Friday? This girl. I have a 3-day weekend ahead of me and I couldn't be more estactic to use these days to put my life back together. You know when you just continually let things slide and before you know it everything is in disorder? My apartent needs a good cleaning, laundry hasn't been done in I don't know how long, my finals are due, and DCT and I need to have a date night at the grocery store.

I know this sounds like a pretty lame-o extended weekend, but I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be able to have time to do all of this. Kids, welcome to adult life ;)

Enough about my thrilling weekend plans, lets talk about denim. Specifically denim on denim, this look is very on trend for summer and though it can seem tricky to pull off, following a few simple guidelines will help you look casual-chic and not at all like you're signing up for a 90's boy band revival - denim jumpsuits, frosted tips, and all!

Whenever I go for the denim on denim look I try to pair denim in different washes or colors as it keeps the outfit from being one note. Adding a denim piece with some sort of print - like polka dots! - or distressing also helps break up a more monochromatic look by adding texture.

Also, accessories are your best friend when pairing denim with denim. Add a cool leather belt, a playful scarf - see above! ;) - or layered necklaces. Again, this helps break up the look so it's more appealing to the eye :)

Finally, the key to trying this trend is finding denim that fits you! You can follow all the previous guidelines to a tee, but the look still won't go over well if your denim is ill-fitting. And now-a-days you don't have to spend a fortune for a pair of great jeans, Gap 1969 have always been a go-to for me, along with Levi's and Madewell is my heaven on earth when it comes to great fitting denim.

So what are your thoughts? Will you be trying out the denim on denim trend this summer? Lemme know!

Thanks for reading! Happy Weekend!

How to Style :: Punk Fashion

Hi all!

As most of you may know this past Monday was the Met Gala, a.k.a the Oscars of the fashion industry with a lot more flair and risk taking when it comes to the red carpet looks, because it's the fashion industry and that's what we do ;)

Rather than show you a handful of pictures of what the celebs wore and go over who I believed was best/worst dressed (I'll leave that to Jena over on ChiCityFashion, she's always on point when reviewing red carpet looks), I thought I'd have a little fun with the theme of the night Punk: From Chaos to Couture, and create some punk rock inspired looks. I don't have anything remotely punk in my closet, so I put together a few collages of how I would rock punk fashion.

I hope you enjoy as I had a lot of fun creating a character for myself and putting these looks together :D

Style Inspiration :: Punk Chic
*Shop: River Island Green Floral Blazer / New Look Ramones Tee / DKNY Leather Paneled Leggings / Cotton On Fringe Bucket Bag / Rika Feather & Tooth Necklace / Boohoo Spike Bangle / ASOS Metallic Flatform Creeper / Kevyn Aucoin 'Blood Rose' Lip Color

I'm actually really into this look and could see myself wearing everything except for the creepers, I just can't get into them. There are few people who can completely rock creepers and I am definitely not one of them. However, I think they totally make this look and if I were to see a girl walking down the street in this ensemble I would think that chick was B.A. and would want to be her friend so she can pass me some of her cool street cred, haha!

Style Inspiration :: Punky Pink
*Shop: Joie Behati Dress / Rebecca Taylor Denim Vest / NastyGal Spike Necklace / Forever 21 Studded Wrap Bracelet / Need Supply Co Spectrum Bag (on sale for $33!) / Urban Outfitters Skull Ring / Dr. Martens

You know I had to style a look with some Doc's and I couldn't say no to these bubble gum pink studded pair. I like how the white eyelet dress and pink Dr. Martens make for a more feminine look while the added spikes, studs, skulls, and denim moto vest make her super edgy. Don't get me started on that hair, so fierce.

Style Inspiration :: Punk Rock
*Shop: Calypso St. Barth High Low Tee / Maison Scotch Tie Dye Jeans / Zara Ankle Buckle Boot / New Look Stud Bucket Bag / Club Manhattan Cuff Bracelet / Dorothy Perkins Spike Headband / Zara Studded Leather Belt / Deborah Lippmann 'Billionaire' Nail Color

This outfit is something I would totally wear if I were going to an indie rock concert. I'm obsessed with the Zara buckle boots and the Maison Scotch tie dye jeans give great depth and texture to the overall look.

So what do you think? Did I style punk right or was it a totally flop? How would you rock punk style?

Just another friendly reminder that we're moving this week! We ran into a couple of technical difficulties but we're back on track and I'd say expect to see a whole new space come Friday! I'm so excited to share it with you all :)

Hope you're having a great week so far, thanks for reading!

Getting Kinky: A New Natural 'Do

Happy Monday! I have a little surprise for you all today :) If you follow me on InstaGram then you already know that I got a little scissor happy last week and ended up chopping off a good chunk of my fro.

My ability to focus on anything related to school or work was nonexistent and I found myself falling deeper and deeper into natural hair boards on Pinterest and digging through the archives on Merely Marie - who's blog I love and have followed for a while now, and she always has this uncanny ability to convince me to switch up my hair style. Case and point, this day.

Before I knew what hit me I was in the bathroom, scissors in hand, cutting away. For the record, this is something I highly recommend you do not do, unless you're experienced and very comfortable with cutting your own hair. I sometimes get very impulsive, especially when it comes to my hair, and since I've been itching for a new summer time 'do when the thought to cut it hit, I went for it.

Now granted I was at home all day so I didn't put any effort whatsoever into my hair, and that's my excuse for why it looks totally lopsided, but it had been pretty tangled and knotted lately as I'd been lazy and hadn't properly detangled in quite awhile, in addition to sleeping with it left unprotected (ahh! I know, I'm a horrible natural hair caretaker) my ends were dry, matted, and just plain gross. DCT compared it to having a mushroom around my head (he really knows how to compliment his lady...) So clearly something had to be done....

And then this happened.

I was attempting to go for a tapered fro, and I may have gone a little shorter than I actually intended, especially at the top, but I won't lie, I really like it! It took me a day or two to get used to it, but it's super easy to maintain which is perfect for both being on-the-go for summer and my innate laziness.

So we're back to TWA status, but like I said, I don't mind. I've always liked the way I look with short hair, even when I was getting it relaxed. I feel like it lightens up my face, and I'm even thinking about going a step further and adding some color soon, ya know, just because :)

Do you have any plans for your summertime hair? Let me know!

Outfitted :: Pretty Birds

H&M white tee / Anthropologie parrot skirt / Ash sandals / Tiara Love necklace / Elizabeth & James sunglasses

Woo! It's Friday! And I'm coming to y'all today with another Style Me Friday challenge. I feel as if Eboni and I had some sort of psychic connection for this week's inspiration - the white tee, as I just recently discussed the versatility of this closet essential and had plans of sharing an outfit showcasing it. So we're killing two birds with one stone today, Friday productivity at its finest :D

As Eboni and I both mention, the white tee is the chic and versatile closet staple. There are so many ways you can style it, so be sure to check out some posts from the link up as I'm sure there will be some very creative and interesting styling. I know I'll be looking for some inspiration on how to rework my tee.

For today I went for a more casual-chic look - a slightly undone tee, a statement skirt, plus complimentary shoes and accessories. I would wear this to the office, on a casual date night, or for a fancier Sunday Funday affair ;)

While I love my white tee, I absolutely adore my parrot skirt! A Crossroads find, I purchased it right before LuckyFABB and ended up wearing it for the first day of the conference. It's comfortable, breathes, and with a quirky, tropical print how can you go wrong?! It just makes me smile every time I look at it :)

I don't know about you all but this was such a weird week as I feel as if it went by so fast, yet so sloooow. We're right on the cusp of summer time, my spring semester of grad school is coming to an end and I think the combination of stress from final preparations and excitement for an upcoming break is making me feel all out of sync. I just have to survive this next week and then we are in the clear!

Don't forget KATNP is going to be moving over to Wordpress next week which means Google Friend Connect and eventually Google Reader will no longer be available to follow the blog. So definitely look into following via BlogLovin' or another reader app of your choice! I also always share links to new posts on both Facebook and Twitter if you'd prefer following that way :)

Thanks for reading and have a fabulous weekend!
