Closet Cleansing: Step 1. Purge

Hi everyone! So over the next couple weeks I've decided to take myself through a closet cleansing process. As you all know I gave up shopping for Lent (still going strong! Some how...), and I thought I should use the last few weeks to really assess my closet and my style in order to prepare myself when I can (finally!!) start shopping again and not end up buying things I really don't need or just don't really fit into my personal style. I'd like to take you all on this journey with me and maybe it'll help some of you reassess your closet.

So, step 1! As with any cleansing process is to Purge yourself of unwanted/needed items. I went through every nook and cranny of my closet (which honestly isn't that difficult as its super tiny), cleaning out all the clothing that I hadn't touched in years (Yes years. I may be a bit of a hoarder...).

It was actually quite difficult as I had lots of sentimental attachments to a few pieces, but I developed a sort of ruling system for myself that helped me eliminate pieces:

1. If it doesn't fit, whether the size is too big/small (be honest with yourself!), if it's just too stretched out from wear, maybe it shrunk in the wash, etc.
2. If I haven't worn it in the past 6 months (for winter items); for spring/summer items do I remember wearing it last season
3. If it doesn't feel like you anymore, it doesn't really fit in your sense of style (that makes sense, right? Haha!)
4. If it's damaged in any way (honestly ask yourself if its worth fixing and if 1. you'll do it yourself or 2. have someone else do it...I, for one, am really really lazy when it comes to fixing garments and wouldn't do it unless I was absolutely in love with the item and it was a semi-recent purchase)
5. If you've had it since high school and you are now in your 20s, even if you've worn it a few times since high school(that really could just be me....).

After going through this process I realized more than half of the stuff in my closet I wasn't even wearing, it was simply taking up space! While that's hard to believe, I can't stop thinking about all the space I now have to fill up with clothes I will actually wear (yayyyyyyy!).

Have any of you gone through a closet cleansing? Any tips or tricks you'd like to share? Stay tuned next week when I assess the damage done to my closet ;) Thanks so much for reading!

'Till Next Time...

Don't you feel like weight has just been lifted off your shoulders? I mean it's slightly depressing that I don't have as many clothes in my closet, but at least now I can easily find the stuff I actually do wear, haha! Thanks for commenting! :)

Everytime I buy something I try to get rid of something. But I do try to purge every month or two. Things have gotten real crazy since I've discovered thrift shopping.

That's a great way to maintain a balance in your closet! And now that I think about it, I've sort of done the same thing since starting my job. I work at a resale clothing store and anytime I see something I must have I usually go through my closet and decide what I'm willing to sell to them to get that item. But then I'll also just drop the cash for something if I'm too lazy to go through my closet (which happened quite often, haha!)....Thanks for commenting! :)
